There are few learning interventions that leave one with an unshakeable belief that they belong to the category of lifetime musts. There is also little doubt that the “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” is one of such. A three day programme focused on improving personal effectiveness, leadership and inter-personal interactions, the Seven Habits is a foundational programme that everyone ought to experience at some time (preferably relatively early) in their lives.
While many have read the “Seven Habits” book, a flagship by Dr. Stephen R.
Covey, feedback from those that have gone on to attend the programme shows that the experience provided by the interactive engagements, videos and the role plays at the workshop simply takes the understanding and appreciation of the concepts to a totally different level of reality. One is therefore obviously no substitute for the other.
The “Seven Habits” is to some people, who may have heard of it but not had the experience, a clichéd reference to motivational talk or speak. This is a huge fallacy, sometimes triggered by the common use of numbers in prescribing a desirable intervention e.g. “Ten palliatives for a good night’s sleep”; “five guaranteed weight loss strategies”; “three ingredients for a happy marriage” and so many other purported foolproof guides. The
Seven Habits is however far from shallow or superficial, it is deep, robust and expansive. The programme’s value is in its ability to teach the essence of leadership in a way that answers the question "how?”, while leaving the eventual “what?” to do, to the individual. It is both prescriptive, and yet also descriptive – thus providing guidance, yet engaging the depth of each person’s individuality in determining how best to steer the course of their lives.
It teaches the essence of leadership through a simple framework called the
“Maturity Continuum” which serves as an objective yardstick for measuring not only the current effectiveness of a leader, but more importantly provides a framework for the systematic improvement of that standing on a sustainable, measurable basis, over time.
